THE NEW TUSCANY 2 | Matakana Coast in God's own, New Zealand,
where dreams are made for a season
Code: ph11-02
THE
STORY:
Like Tuscany 1, after months of considering the History of Tuscany in central Italy, the Renaissance (Rinascimento in Italian means “rebirth”), dating back to the 14th century and what is developing in this North Auckland district in New Zealand, this sight greeted me driving to Omaha beach for an early morning SUP (Stand Up & Paddle board). Although Warkworth/Matakana is only on a small scale, since 1990 I have watched the development of men's and women's dreams, not dissimilar, but without the wars and prehistory that the Tuscan's had endured. Comfortably ensconced by beautiful ocean bays and islands to the east, the fortress ranges of Tamahunga to the north, and with few (but very fertile) plains, the region has a relief that is dominated by hilly country. The first settlers came to log the native timbers, the next generation established the farms and the food, shelter and service industries required by these settlers fuelled the growth of communities around the churches, sport clubs and pubs. Most of the labour today is farming with a changing emphasis to vineyards and olive groves, lifestyle blocks, tourism and the arts.
The colours in Tuscany 2 are de saturated to reflect colours currently fashionable in New Zealand scenic photography.
Could Warkworth, could Matakana and the embedded towns become to New Zealand what Tuscany has to Italy?
Let our children tell the story in 100 years time.
