YOU TAUGHT ME TO FISH FOR TEA - and now I know your 're proud of me
Code: pa09-87
THE
STORY:
I photographed my friend Graham Braddock's daughter Geraldine in a willow tree while she was fishing on their small dam. After looking at the images an idea formed to use it in a setting amongst Pohutukawa trees (New Zealand Christmas trees) on Auckland's Waitemata Harbor. In the final stages of completion, using the story of teaching a child to fish, I pictured the yachts, years later, as a symbol of success, an acquisition of the grown up child who had appreciated dads willingness and attention to detail in educating his child.
On reflection this is a journey worth the initial patience and sacrifice of the father to help the child understand the techniques necessary in catching food for the table. Thus a lifestyle was gained from the original disciplines acquired.
The painting was produced in 1987 and has been in the collection of the artist since then. In 2011 the framing has been freshened up with the addition of the text .
